San Jose 2013 - Winchester Mystery House and Sourdough

Today was the day. It was time. It needed to be done. Bucket List items don't just check themselves off. Now I have to admit I was afraid. Not of the spirit of Mrs. Winchester, but the typhoon of the terrible two tantrums. We've had a meltdown every day and the last thing I wanted was to get to the Winchester House only to have Baby Girl go into a fit and have to leave. But it was time. We were going to the Winchester House.

She had had a pretty easy-going morning. She played with her guppies and farm animals in the bathroom (she loves the pocket door) while I perused Facebook, killing time before the Winchester house opened. When I told her it was time to go, she grabbed her cow and pig and out the door we went. No fighting, no struggle.

I, of course, was skeptical. I just knew it was some kind of a con game. We drove to the house and the minute we got out she started saying, "Castle!". And it did look like a castle, well an American castle anyway. We bought out tickets for the mansion tour and then played in the courtyard.

Gotta have the selfie.

Beautiful Tiffany stain glass windows that were throughout the mansion.

Baby Girl's castle

Unfortunately, everything in the house is copyrighted so there is no picture taking inside. But here is a picture I got off Google of Mrs. Winchester. It is the only known picture of her at the house and she was a super tall 4'9" and some of the doors and ceilings are a testament to that.

I don't know where this guy got all his pics (probably Google as well), but it's a pretty accurate retelling of what the tour guide told us today, aside from his personal beliefs on why she kept building.

Of course, everyone wants to know if it's haunted. This is what I can tell you. My "ghost vibe" never went off. Usually, I know when I'm not alone and I never got that feeling inside this house. Of course, it's a huge house and we only covered a fraction of it. There was only 1 unexplained thing that happened while I was there. As I turned the corner to go into the next room, there were 3 loud bangs. The lady behind me turned the corner and there were 3 more loud bangs, then nothing. Now, the banging came from the wall right beside me and there was no one behind it. It was a little creepy, but I'm in a house full of tour guides, guests and staff, it's hard to debunk anything with that kind of traffic. But it was pretty cool, given ghostly hammering is one of the sounds claimed to be heard.

What I will say is Mrs. Winchester was quite the environmentalist for her day, she had many water saving "gadgets" in her house including slanted countertops by the sinks and a slanted roof in an upstairs conservatory to make sure any water that spilled over there ran into the gardens below. She was also infatuated with the number 13 and daisies, which is apparent throughout the house.

Baby Girl was a complete doll during this hour and fifteen minute tour, so once it was over I let her run (literally) the beautiful gardens.

Are ya comin' Momma?

I love how I caught the sun behind this tower.

The rose gardens at Winchester.

For real, who doesn't love palm trees?

Iconic view of this beautiful house.

Front view

Baby Girl checking out the Serpent Fountain at the entrance of the house. It is said President Teddy Roosevelt came to pay Mrs. Winchester a visit, but one of the staff didn't recognize him and told the president that if he wanted a job, he'd have to go around to the back like all the other staff. President Roosevelt was so insulted he left and never came back. Those front doors are the ones he's said to have gone to.

Porch railing and lovely flower.

Even though I didn't see any ghosts, it was an awesome day. So awesome Baby Girl and I took a two hour nap! In my defense I did carry a 2-year old over a mile through narrow hallways and steep stairs, I think I deserved a nap.

It was time to get Mike and I still had one last Bucket List item to check off before leaving San Jose. I hit Google and searched for a place I could get authentic San Francisco sourdough bread. Thankfully, I came across Boudin San Francisco Sourdough so I didn't have to drive back to San Fran (that traffic is beyond crazy y'all).

I had the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.

Bucket List #5 - check

The clam chowder was pretty awesome, the bread was good, but didn't blow my mind. A little note for all you clam chowder fans, cilantro does not work in this soup. I learned to eat around the cilantro. Had I known they put cilantro in it, I would've asked them to leave it off.

Because, Baby Girl had been such an awesome kid we decided she needed an awesome gift and took her to the Build-a-Bear workshop. She made herself a stuffed puppy, named Puppy (hey, she's 2). She kissed the heart and even gave him a bath.

A kid can never have too many stuffed animals, right? We also went to Godiva Chocolate and See's Candy because an adult can never have too much chocolate right?

Flash Fiction Friday ~ Mrs. Pinkerton

Michelle turned in circle; she couldn't remember the way back to the B&B. She had looked forward to this weekend and now she was going to spend it lost in the forest. She rubbed her hands together while biting her lip.

"Are you lost, sweetie?"

Michelle let out a small cry as she looked up to see an elderly woman standing in front of her.

"Yes, I'm at the B&B.  Can you please help me?"

"Follow me, dear."

The two women walked in silence as they made their way to the B&B.

"It's just up ahead, hon."

Michelle soon ran into the worried B&B caretaker.

"I'm sorry," began Michelle, "I got lost; this nice lady helped me."

As she turned to thank her savior, she saw only an empty path.

"Must have been Mrs. Pinkerton,” said the caretaker, “her sweet, departed soul can't stand to see a person in trouble."

Scotland/London ~ Day 3 ~ The Haunting of Jennifer McMurrain

The waves crashed against the cliff's side as the wind pounded on the door like a stranger begging to get in. The young princess looked out her window of Dunnottar Castle and prayed the ship made it into the harbor. She could just make out the vessel, it bobbed like a tiny cork among the giant waves of the storm. Her stomach dropped with every lurch of the ship, even though she stood on solid ground. That ship carried her love, there would be no peace until she was in his arms again.
Ok, the writer in me had to do that. Today, I visited my very first castle... first castle EVER... like in my entire life. And like most people (especially we women who have very romantic notions of castles) I was in awe. It didn't hurt that this particular castle, Dunnottar Castle, has been on my Bucket List for as long as I can remember. I have seen stunning picture after stunning picture of this splendid feature and it still doesn't do the "live" version justice.

Now common senses tells me my romantic notion of castle living is flawed. Life in the 16th century was hard regardless of where you lived, it was even harder if you were a prisoner. No harder, doesn't do it justice... there's a reason jails are referred to as dungeons and torture chambers. The pain and suffering that took place is not one I could or want to imagine, but when I walked into the dungeons I felt it.

Ok, Jennifer's gonna sound strange alert: I see dead people.

No, that's not true, I don't see dead people. In fact, I don't want to see dead people. Pretty sure if I saw a ghost now (I saw one as a child) I'd pee my pants and run screaming so loud the locals would believe a banshee was present.

I don't see them, but I feel them. I know when one is present. This is happened to me on a number of occasions, but nothing has felt as strong as when I walked into the dungeon of Dunnottar Castle.

Just walking in there I was absolutely terrified and to be completely honest I didn't know it was the dungeon until I left. The sign said "Warden's Office" for some reason I was thinking more along the lines of some type of official, like a school warden, not a prison warden.

The feeling that comes over me is hard to explain, but this time I also had physical symptoms... my stomach dropped and I felt a bit queasy, my legs turned to jelly as I felt extreme pressure in my head. A huge part of me wanted to look around the room, not for ghosts, but just in general, but I couldn't. I literally took a few pics and left. There is something in that room and it is evil. Not bad, not tortured, not Casper the friendly ghost... EVIL.

It took a good 10 to 15 minutes saying prayers in the sun before I felt better. And yes I prayed, the last thing I wanted was something following me home. And yes I believe that happens, too. I told you, weird Jennifer alert.

The tour of the rest of the castle was pretty uneventful, until I walked into the brewery. Again I felt I was not alone. But this was not an evil presence as the one in the dungeon.

I've look through all my pictures and didn't see anything paranormal. But there is no doubt that Dunnottar Castle is full of history, both pleasant and evil and history has a way of lingering...
