My 2 year old can sight read her alphabet. We have video
proof that she can. She can also put her shoes on the right feet (as long as it’s
the Velcro kind), knows every one of the Bubble Guppies by name, almost all her
colors and numbers, and can just about do any animal sound on demand.
One thing she can’t do is grasp this whole toilet situation.
Even though it only takes a few minutes, she hates to sit on the potty. She
will scream, kick and bite to get out of it, even though she never does. Once I
get her on the potty, all bloody and bruised (me not her) she just sits there
and looks at me like, “Now, what?”
We’ve read books about going to the potty, we’ve done a
little potty song and dance, and she’s gotten positive reinforcement in the way
of Mini M&M’s every time she does goes pee pee in the potty (3 times over
the past 2 months). She will “hold it”
for 5 and a half hours at Mother’s Day Out and then let the flood gates open
into her diaper or pull-up once she gets home, but refuses to pee pee in the
potty.
Every time I’m ready to call it quits and tell myself she’s
just not ready, she goes in the potty. I’m beginning to think she’s messing
with me. It’s all a toddler mind game and I’m losing!
